Book List: Asia

Kids Read: Kuwait

We read one book that takes place partially in Kuwait. The beginning of the story paints a picture of a beautiful vibrant place teeming with life. You can read more about it below.

If you know of any other great stories set in Kuwait, or by a Kuwaiti author, please let me know so I can add them to our list!

Kid Reads

Where Butterflies Fill the Sky paints a beautiful picture of life in Kuwait as author Zahra Marwan was growing up. Boats sailing, loving family gathering and protecting each other, and butterflies filling the sky. When young Zahra learns she must leave, she is upset, but with her family travels to a new desert land where she finds a new place to belong.

Poetic text highlights the loss of traditions, culture, and strong ties to family and land Marwan felt leaving Kuwait.  It also captures the joy she felt finding a new place to call home and by keeping in touch with family in Kuwait.

Back matter includes more information about the author’s life and family including why they immigrated to the US. The notes about the art add so much depth and meaning to the illustrations. After reading them I went back and read the book again and got so much more out of it. Don’t skip the back matter!
